As it relates to Exercise

In my experience and studies I have found that quality of movement should be prioritized over quality of exercise. “Well isn’t exercise and movement the same thing??” You ask. Although very similar these terms are very different.

Let’s break it down:

Movement is defined as the act of changing physical location or position..
Exercise is defined as an activity requiring physical effort, carried out especially to sustain or improve health and fitness.

In other terms:

People often tend to think that by performing an exercise it will assist in their movement. Yes sometimes this is applicable however, It is movement that grants you the ability to exercise. So why not focus on movement in order to exercise better?

For instance:

– The quality of your scapular movement can affect your shoulder health and overhead exercise ability.

– Your ability to control lumbopelvic movement can affect your lower back health and ability to transmit power in jumping exercises.

– Your ability to move your hips while keeping a rigid torso will affect performance in squatting and hinging exercises.

Optimal movement is a result of optimal function and optimal function results in optimal performance.
This is why it is important to prioritize movement quality before progressing to exercises that overload the local structures. You can not stack performance measures on top of dysfunction without stacking the risks of injury as well.

Example: Wearing a weighted vest has the same effect on improving running mechanics that excessively loading a barbell has on improving squatting mechanics. Correct motor patterns and muscle function is the key to permanent strength gains and limited injury. This is a huge component in my training philosophy and I try my best to inform and educate my clients on this concept.
