Routine, Consistency, & Why It’s Good For You

Set yourself up for success!

Many people have their eyes set on big goals. Those goals come in all shapes and sizes: gain weight, lose weight, get a new promotion, run a faster mile, be a great parent. What goals people have are largely personal and everyone will walk their own path to achieve them. Although our goals are often quite different from one another there are key principles that hold true across the board when it comes to setting out to achieve our goals. Consistency is one of those principles.

When setting out to achieve a goal or make a lifestyle change consistency will undoubtedly play a key role in whether or not you are successful. What is consistency? Well, when it comes to achieving your goals I would define consistency as follows: Repeatedly making productive choices that align with one's long term goals over an extended period of time. Pretty simple right? Just make good choices over time and like that all of your goals will be achieved. Well in theory that sounds awesome, but this is real life and things aren’t that easy.

Most any goal worth having is going to be challenging and require discipline and sacrifice to achieve. As the age old saying goes, “ If it were easy, everybody would do it.” How then do we set ourselves up for success when it comes to being consistent? Well, that's where routine comes into play.

Getting yourself in a productive/positive routine is one of the single best ways to achieve consistency. We all have routines whether we notice them or not. Some more helpful than others. When seeking to make a lifestyle change one of the most challenging things you will encounter is breaking old limiting habits and forming new helpful ones. A popular example is going to the gym straight from work. This routine is awesome because it cuts out all of the distractions one might encounter when stopping home. You can’t accidently binge watch netflix if you never turn on the T.V. right?

Other popular routines that people see a lot of success with could include: training first thing in the morning, have a set meal prep day for better nutrition, even setting a bedtime. The list goes on and on. The point here is to show that we can set ourselves up for success by establishing a routine that aligns with our goals. Being set in a routine allows us to stay consistent with the right choices rather than having to constantly battle to make the right call each time something difficult comes up.

So, here’s the gameplan. First establish your goal and why it is important to you. Next realise that the road will not always be easy, but in order to achieve our goals we must be consistent. Lastly, set yourself up for success by intentionally designing routines that will help you stay consistent and ultimately achieve your goal.
