3 Benefits of Interval Training

Life's an interval workout

1. Time Efficiency

Interval training, specifically H.I.I.T. (high intensity interval training), provides much more “bang for your buck” when it comes to time investment. H.I.I.T. allows you to work at higher energy output levels (i.e. percent of max heart rate) compared to long sustained training which allows you to burn more calories in less time. When life gets hectic, a potent dose of H.I.I.T. can provide a more potent dose of exercise with a more limited schedule.

2. Variety of Training

Interval training provides us with more variety, and just as variety is “the spice of life,” it can spice things up for your training. You can make your intervals short and fast, like assault bike sprints. You can also make intervals longer with less rest (i.e. 5 minutes on / 1 minute off for 3 sets) to allow for greater effort during the work portion compared to one fifteen minute block. Intervals can include all different modalities: bike, row, run, swim, weightlifting, gymnastics, or any combinations you can think of.

3. Universally Applicable

Interval training can be performed by anyone. Intensity may vary, but a patient in cardiac rehab can benefit from interval training just as much as a CrossFit Games athlete (anyone recall the 2223 intervals event at the Games?). This is where the above variance can also have a massive benefit; the modality and time domains can be modified for anyone to reap the benefits of interval training.
